Provide educators with the tools and practical skills they need to improve adolescent literacy outcomes.

UnboundEd invites districts or charter management organizations (CMOs) to join our Adolescent Literacy Planning & Implementation Collaborative (ALPIC), a professional learning cohort focused on improving adolescent literacy instruction and addressing student achievement gaps. A team of four to six administrators and educators from each participating middle school will work with UnboundEd through the 2025–2026 school year.

The school team will receive specialized literacy training, personalized coaching, and dedicated support grounded in the science of reading and social-emotional learning. Ultimately, they will develop a research-based, actionable, and meaningful plan to support adolescent learners.


Educators will:

  • Conduct root cause analysis around their school’s literacy instruction
  • Receive job-embedded, individualized coaching to develop and implement a school literacy action plan
  • Engage in a series of professional learning sessions and  ongoing professional networking

Educators will leave with:

  • An understanding of how to use Structured Literacy in their classrooms
  • A vision of how to engage students in socio-emotional learning within literacy instruction
  • A plan to use tools of continuous improvement, including analytics, within their school context

School teams will engage in:

  • 25 hours of professional learning sessions for school teams (four to six participants)
  • 12 hours of implementation Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) training
  • Additional professional learning and coaching to support implementation

FAQs

  • What are the commitments of each participating team?

    Districts/CMOs and middle schools must commit to participating in the cohort through the 2025–2026 school year.

    They will be required to complete the following tasks:

    • Identify a district employee to serve as a liaison for the grant.
    • Complete a Memorandum of Understanding and data sharing agreement with UnboundEd.
    • Identify a group of administrators/educators per school who will serve as the literacy leadership team and commit and be enabled to have time for the training/support.
  • What takes place during the first phase of the program?

    Literacy leadership teams engage in virtual professional learning regarding:

    • Structured literacy and the science of reading,
    • Social-emotional learning as it relates to literacy instruction, and
    • Tools of continuous improvement, including analytics.

    At the end of this professional learning, literacy teams create a plan to implement at their school.

  • What takes place during the second phase of the program?

    Schools implement their literacy plans, with support from our team including:

    • Job-embedded coaching and support,
    • Ongoing professional learning and networking for participating schools, and
    • Support with data analysis.
  • When does the program begin?

    Cohort 1 began the work in the summer of 2024, and Cohort 2 will start the program in summer 2025.
