Five Phases of Successful Materials Adoptions

  • Phase I: Lead with a Vision and a Plan

Form a District Adoption Leadership Team to lead the curriculum adoption process, recruiting and selecting a District Adoption Committee, and creating a district instructional vision to guide instruction across the district.

  • Phase II: Know Your Needs

Reflect on and analyze data, research, best practices, and previous material adoptions to establish district priorities and needs for the current adoption.

  • Phase III: Identify and Evaluate Your Options

Identify “cut criteria” and criteria for further investigation, and utilize these criteria to create your own rubric or leverage a state-created rubric or evaluative tool to assess the refined list of materials options.

  • Phase IV: Select Your Best Fit

Determine how to further investigate and gather data on final contender materials with broader stakeholder groups, and then make a final decision.

  • Phase V: Prepare for Launch and Implementation

Charting a strong implementation plan is crucial to maximizing your new instructional materials.

UnboundEd’s Curriculum Implementation Team leads work to set district teams up to implement materials effectively.

The UnboundEd Curriculum Adoption Team has been a valuable resource to support our planning of our pilot process, determining our district vision and goals around mathematics instruction and ideas for ensuring equitable access for all staff and students when it comes to high-quality materials. The team is very knowledgeable and helps keep you and your district team on track to go through this process seamlessly.

Our Impact

Our Impact

UnboundEd began a partnership with Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) over the 2024-25 school year to lead an effective and collaborative curriculum adoption process in order to ensure all students have access to high-quality instructional materials. The VCUSD team centered the voices, perspectives, and assets of students, families, and teachers across their adoption process as they created a strong district instructional vision for mathematics, engaged in a comprehensive needs assessment, and created and utilized a rubric aligned to their specific district needs and priorities as well as research-based best practices.
